Plot summary
Fourteen-year-old Maria lives with a family attached to the Society of St. Paul, a Traditionalist Catholic group, and at home she answers to their strict reading of the faith, weighing every thought and deed before God. At school she lives like any other teenager. She has dedicated her life to serving God, and she begins a course of harsh religious self-denial across fourteen stages, each named for one of the stations on Jesus's road to Golgotha, in the hope that God will heal her younger brother's autism. At school she also meets Christian, a boy her age who does not pull her from that goal.
