Plot summary
After twenty years in a psychiatric institution, Dennis Cleg, known since childhood as Spider, is released into a halfway house for mentally disturbed people in London. The landlady, Mrs. Wilkinson, is unrelenting, and Spider says little to her or to his housemates about the thoughts that put him there. Roaming the derelict streets and the canal nearby, he relives a 1950s childhood with his mother, Mrs. Cleg, and his father, Bill, watching their household as if from outside and unable to intervene. He keeps transferring his mother's image onto other women, among them Yvonne, a woman at the pub his father frequented. In his room he twists strands of yarn into web-like shapes and uses Mrs. Wilkinson's keys to get into other rooms.

- Cronenberg revealed at a Kodak Lecture Series Q&A in May 2005 that neither he, Fiennes, Richardson nor the producers received any salary during the shooting of the film; all chose to waive their salaries so the money could bankroll the under-funded production.
