Plot summary
John, the last of the disciples still living, is in exile, telling the story of his time with Jesus. Jesus is born in Bethlehem to Mary, and three wise men arrive and hail him as the future King. Some thirty years on, Jesus travels to Galilee and recruits followers: James, his brother John, Peter the fisherman, Matthew the tax collector and Mary Magdalene. His teachings and miracles win him a large following who call him the Messiah, and the Pharisees accuse him of blasphemy for forgiving sins. Jesus tells the disciples they are bound for Jerusalem for Passover, where Caiaphas, head of the Pharisees, fears his presence will agitate a people already restless under Roman rule.
