Plot summary
Vivienne Freeman, an eccentric teenager, hitches a ride from Alex Hughes, a visiting Englishman just released from prison. Just before they reach her hometown of Wawa, Ontario, a transport truck rams the car and Vivienne is killed. Alex, barely hurt, goes to see her mother, Linda, to hand over gifts Vivienne had bought for her. Linda, who is autistic and keeps her home meticulously neat, has been told of the death only hours before and shows no grief. She asks Alex to stay a few days, because the garbage must go out when the truck comes and Vivienne always did it. He agrees, arranges the funeral, and meets Linda's neighbor Maggie, whom Linda takes to be a prostitute.

- Screenwriter Angela Pell wrote the role of Alex Hughes specifically with Alan Rickman in mind, and it was Rickman himself, after reading the script, who made sure his former Galaxy Quest co-star Sigourney Weaver was approached to play Linda.
- To play an autistic character, Sigourney Weaver researched the condition and was coached by Ros Blackburn, an autistic author and public speaker on autism and Asperger's syndrome, while Alan Rickman deliberately avoided researching autism so his character's reactions to her would feel genuinely shocked.
- Both Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver were runners-up in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories at the Seattle International Film Festival for their performances.
