Plot summary
Kyoshiro Nemuri has no lord and no family, and he drifts from town to town. In one town he takes up the cause of Asahina, the shogunate's frugal financial adviser, who has trimmed the shogun's daughter's allowance. The princess is used to indulging herself and is enraged at the man who closed her purse. She plots to have Asahina killed, and the order covers anyone who protects him, which puts Kyoshiro in the same danger. The quarrel spreads into a court open to corruption, with an honest public official among those it touches.
