Plot summary
Amy is a schoolteacher, eight years past the college episode she has never told anyone about. She is engaged to John, who believes a couple should hide nothing from each other. On a visit to her parents' house, she finally gives in to his urging and tells him about what happened with her dog, Rufus. Her brother Dougie, who had listened in, repeats it at the breakfast table, and Amy admits that he is right. Her mother tells her she is ashamed, and her father stops speaking to her. Back home, Amy and John find their relationship strained, and Amy moves out, finding an apartment with help from her co-worker Ed.
