Plot summary
Aboard Global Airways Flight 502, bound from Oakland to Minneapolis, passenger Elly Brewster finds a threat scrawled in lipstick on a first-class bathroom mirror. Captain Hank O'Hara takes it for a hoax until a second lipstick message turns up on the serving tray of the lead stewardess, Angela Thacher, and orders the plane to divert to Anchorage. To avoid an explosive decompression, O'Hara descends and flies north at low altitude, which burns more fuel. Passenger Gary Brown points O'Hara to the erratic behavior of his seatmate, Sgt. Jerome K. Weber, but O'Hara is not convinced the man is the bomber. Storms drain the tanks further as the flight continues north.

- The production obtained a World Airways Boeing 707 to play the part of the "Global Airways" airliner. With 90% of the filming done inside a 707 set, Heston compared his work there to what Alfred Hitchcock had achieved in filming Lifeboat in 1944.
- Then-current Air National Guard North American F-100 Super Sabres of the 188th Fighter Squadron were painted up as the Soviet interceptors, but the detail slipped elsewhere: some of the Soviet soldiers at the Moscow airport carry American M16 rifles, and the sedans are Swedish Volvo 164s.
- Nearly 160 hijackings took place in American airspace between 1961 and 1973, the years that also produced David Harper's novel Hijacked, published in 1970.
