Trailer

Plot summary

Mar disappeared months ago at another rave. Her father Luis travels to the deserts of southern Morocco with his son Esteban and their dog Pipa to look for her. At the rave they reach, some ravers say a second party is being held farther into the desert, and that Mar might be there. Soldiers arrive to shut the rave down and order the European attendees to leave, so the ravers set off in two vans and Luis, Esteban and Pipa follow in their compact van. The radio reports that armed conflict has broken out between two countries, and the group continues south, toward a spot close to Mauritania.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Sirât (2025)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • While shooting in Morocco, the production faced intense heat and sandstorms, and one sandstorm broke most of the equipment and lenses, forcing extensive reshoots.
  • Apart from Sergi López and Bruno Núñez, none of the main cast were professional actors; they were street-cast by costume designer and casting director Nadia Acimi, Laxe's former wife. Jade Oukid was found at a festival in Portugal, Tonin Janvier lost a leg in a motorcycle accident, and Stefania Gadda is an Italian rancher who lives off-grid.
  • Funding rules forced part of the shoot to Spain, where locations were found to stand in for Morocco's Atlas and Anti-Atlas deserts. Instead of Los Monegros, Laxe was persuaded to film in the Rambla de Barrachina in Aragon, which he called "chiseled by the gods" and which gave him ideas to tweak the screenplay.
  • Laxe first planned a film about "trucks crossing the desert", writing in 2011 a treatment about a truck race he likened to Wacky Races, but the project failed to materialise. While making his second feature, Mimosas, he reconnected with rave culture and retooled the concept into a script about dancing.
