Plot summary
On leave from the army, Hervé Joncour returns to his French hometown, where he courts Hélène, a teacher who wants a garden of her own. Baldabiou, who runs the three silk mills that support the town, is at risk from a silkworm disease spreading across Europe. He persuades Hervé's father, the mayor, to let his son leave the army, and in 1862 Hervé goes to Egypt to buy silkworm eggs. Because the African worms are affected too, Baldabiou next sends him to Japan, a country closed to foreigners. The journey takes months, and at the end of it Hervé is blindfolded and taken to a village where he buys eggs from the local baron, Hara Jubei. During his stay there, he becomes obsessed with Jubei's unnamed concubine.
