Plot summary
Lucas Hill is a diamond trader who has come to Russia with rare blue stones and a buyer waiting for them, the gangster Boris Volkov. The diamonds are with Lucas's contact in St. Petersburg, Pyotr, who has gone missing, and Boris gives Lucas forty-eight hours to produce them. Following the clues Pyotr left behind, Lucas reaches a guest house in Mirny, a rough mining town in Siberia, and speaks briefly with his wife Gabby over Skype. In a cafe he steps in when two drunks harass the owner, Katya, and she saves him afterward when the pair jump him in the parking lot. As the deal stalls, Lucas stays on in Mirny, and he and Katya begin an affair.
