Plot summary
Son Hayes farms fish in southeastern Arkansas, where his younger brothers Boy and Kid live in a van and a tent. Their father left the family long ago and raised a second set of sons on a cotton and soybean farm, among them Cleaman Hayes. The brothers' mother, divorced from the man years before, arrives to say he has died. Son and his brothers go to the funeral, where Son condemns the father who abandoned them. Cleaman and his brothers take it as an insult to their family.
