Plot summary
Repeated attacks by giant creatures push the Japanese government to establish the S-Class Species Suppression Protocol, a task force meant to eliminate further threats. When the team answers an attack by a kaiju called Neronga, a silver giant extraterrestrial descends and defeats the creature, while protocol member Shinji Kaminaga is hurt protecting a lost child. Hiroko Asami, an analyst, moves from her post at the Public Security Intelligence Agency and is paired with Kaminaga, who appears recovered but behaves as though unfamiliar with ordinary social customs. She writes a report on the silver giant and gives it the name Ultraman. The task force is sent out again when another kaiju, Gabora, approaches a nuclear waste storage facility.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Shin Ultraman (2022)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Shinji Higuchi said production was a challenge because the film had a smaller budget than the American MonsterVerse films, so the crew could not destroy the world the way those movies did and compensated with a unique screenplay and interesting characters.
- Kenshi Yonezu's theme song "M87" was originally titled "M78" after Ultraman's fictional home galaxy in the 1966 series, but Hideaki Anno asked for the change to M87 because he felt it was more appealing in terms of setting.
- The first conversation between Ultraman and Mefilas in their human disguises was filmed at Asakusa Ichimon, an izakaya in Tokyo's Asakusa district, and after the film came out the restaurant was inundated with reservations.
- Ultraman's Spacium Beam was created by optical artist Sadao Iizuka using the same technique he used for the original 1966 series, drawing a series of rays on paper and changing their length and position slightly each time.
- The crew struggled to reproduce Ultraman's silver skin color virtually; Shinji Higuchi said the character could not be sprayed with silver paint as in the old days, since mirror-like silver would make his arms and face reflect in each other.
- While shooting in Japan, the team filmed several scenes in 4K using the cast and crew's personal iPhones and iPads.
- Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi used the 3DCG Godzilla model from their 2016 film Shin Godzilla to depict the kaiju Gomess, because Toho sat on the production committee and allowed them to use the original model.
