Plot summary
During the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, lockdown closes the bar that Valerie runs in a small, isolated town, leaving her without work. Her brother, the prison warden, is struggling with a failing marriage, and he helps her get hired as a prison guard. She is assigned to Jackson, an inmate on death row. Their early dealings are formal and distant, but Valerie bakes him cookies and tries to make him laugh, and the two of them begin to talk. Jackson has gone without real human company for a long time, and he starts to open up to her as a friendship grows between the guard and the prisoner.
