Plot summary
By 2078, the mining planet Sirius 6B is a toxic wasteland. A decade of war between the New Economic Bloc, a mining company, and the Alliance, formed by former mining and science workers, has left both armies exhausted and short of supplies and soldiers. The empty ground between them is watched by Autonomous Mobile Swords, robots the Alliance's scientists built that hunt any creature whose heart beats. Troops wear tabs that hide their heartbeats from the machines, nicknamed screamers for their high noise. A New Economic Bloc soldier carrying an offer of safe passage is killed by screamers. Alliance commander Joe Hendricksson reports the offer to his superiors on Earth and is told to ignore it, since talks are already underway there. Private Ace Jefferson, the lone survivor of a transport that crashed on arrival from Earth, disputes that account.

- Dan O'Bannon adapted Philip K. Dick's "Second Variety" in 1981, the same year he adapted the Dick story that became Total Recall. Tom Naud optioned the script by 1983, but the film sat unmade for more than a decade.
- O'Bannon did not know the film existed until after it came out, when his agent rang to tell him he had a screenwriting credit on it. He said the plot and characters were largely his, with much of the dialogue changed.
