Plot summary
Sidney Prescott has settled in Pine Grove, Indiana, where she runs a coffeehouse and lives with her husband, police chief Mark Evans, and their children, including her teenage daughter Tatum and Tatum's younger sisters Emma and Rebecca. Tatum is named after Sidney's late friend Tatum Riley. A call comes from Ghostface, who asks Sidney to join a videocall and appears on screen as Stu Macher, aged and scarred, a killer from Sidney's past. He says he is coming for Tatum and that he is outside the theater where Tatum is rehearsing a play. Sidney arrives with the police, but the killer flees.

- Melissa Barrera, who played Sam Carpenter in the two previous films, was fired from Scream 7 in November 2023 over pro-Palestinian posts about the Gaza war; Spyglass called the posts antisemitic and Barrera denied it.
- After Barrera's firing, calls to boycott Scream 7 circulated on social media, begun by grassroots Scream fans and backed by the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, Film Workers for Palestine, CodePink and the Democratic Socialists of America.
- Christopher Landon, who was hired to direct, exited Scream 7 and said that without Barrera the film he had signed on to direct no longer existed. He was then harassed by some of her fans with threats against him and his family, and studio security and the FBI examined the threats.
- Before the film's release, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass sued Alterian Ghost Factory, which claimed ownership of the Ghostface mask and threatened to sue; in May 2026 the two sides settled and dismissed their lawsuits against each other.

Director Kevin Williamson said the film had an alternate ending, in which the Stu Macher character was revealed to be still alive, that was shown to test audiences and then cut out.- Skeet Ulrich said he was originally supposed to return as Billy Loomis in the original version of Scream 7 as part of a three-film arc, but after Barrera's firing and the creative retooling he was no longer set to appear.
- Mckenna Grace revealed that she originally auditioned for the role of Sidney's daughter Tatum in Scream 7, but ended up being cast as Hannah instead.
- Jenna Ortega denied the reported scheduling conflicts with Wednesday and said she left the role of Tara Carpenter because of changes to the creative team and cast, saying "The Melissa stuff was happening, and it was all kind of falling apart."
