Plot summary
Norm Duncan owns a failing burger stand in Scotland, Pennsylvania, in 1975. Joe "Mac" McBeth works there, and his wife Pat is set on driving him to succeed. When the manager's job opens, Duncan hands it to Douglas McKenna, who has been skimming from the till. Three stoned hippies, one of them a fortune teller, tell Mac they see a drive-thru restaurant in his future. Mac and Pat pass what they know about McKenna to Duncan, who comes to value Mac's efforts. Duncan then tells the McBeths his plan to remake the burger stand as a drive-thru, and Mac grasps how much money a drive-thru could bring in.

- Billy Morrissette came up with the idea for Scotland, PA as a 16-year-old working at a Dairy Queen in his hometown of South Windsor, Connecticut: he hated his boss, had read Macbeth that same year, and told people the play would be hysterical set in a fast-food restaurant where everyone was named Mac. He finished the script in 1998.
- The soundtrack of Scotland, PA is made up entirely of Bad Company songs because, as writer-director Billy Morrissette put it, "the band's catalogue was surprisingly inexpensive".
- The press kit for Scotland, PA was printed in the form of a CliffsNotes study booklet, written by Professor David Linton of Marymount Manhattan College, the same guides Morrissette was reading while studying Shakespeare.
