Plot summary

Saraswatichandra is a young aristocrat whose father arranges his marriage to Kumud, an educated woman from a wealthy family. He calls the engagement off and writes to tell her so. Kumud answers, letters pass between them, and he visits her; the two fall in love, and he returns home promising to come back for her. A family feud follows, and Saraswatichandra writes again to say he cannot marry her. Misunderstandings pile up, and Kumud becomes the wife of Pramad, a rich man who has no education. At Pramad's palace she finds little welcome: he prefers the company of nautch girls and tells her not to comment on his weakness. Saraswatichandra, having given up his home, has been wandering the country.
