Plot summary

Musashi Miyamoto, once called Takezo, walks the roads in search of knowledge and a samurai's character. He stops at a hut and faces Shisido Baiken, who swings a ball and chain and scythe at him, and the orphan boy Jotaro tags along after. In Kyoto, Otsu sells fans by the bridge, waiting. Toji drags Akemi back to entertain Seijuro Yoshioka, who owns a fencing school, and Toji and Akemi's mother Oko talk about the money they will make. Musashi defeats the Yoshioka students one by one and asks for a match with Seijuro. The followers attack his room instead, and he leaves a note asking Seijuro to name the hour and spot for their meeting by Sanjo Bridge. Akemi recognizes the signature, and Matahachi sets off after his old friend.
