Plot summary
Ichi, a blind masseur and swordsman, is on his way to Doyama as the paid guest of an employee of the crime boss Hikozo when rivals of Hikozo overhear the pair at a tea house and kill the guide. Ichi kills the attackers, among them the husband of a woman named Hisa. That night a mortally wounded man begs him to protect Mitsu, the girl samurai are hunting, and to take her to her family in Edo. Mitsu says the samurai want her because, when the local lord tried to force himself on her, she drove her hairpin into his face. At an inn where Hisa is staying with Jingoro, Ichi pays for the room by giving massages. Hisa persuades Mitsu that Ichi intends her harm, and the two leave together.
