Plot summary
The first batch of cadets at the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun includes Sam Manekshaw and his junior rival Tikka Khan. After graduating, Sam joins the 12th Frontier Force Regiment at Ferozpur as a second lieutenant and meets Siloo Bode, whom he marries. Made an acting major in 1942, he takes part in the Burma campaign and is wounded at the Battle of Sittang Bridge, earning the Military Cross. When the British Indian Army is partitioned in 1947, Yahya Khan invites him to join the Pakistan Army, but he stays with India. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and home minister Vallabhbhai Patel then send him and V. P. Menon to Kashmir to secure its accession to India.
