Did you know?!Facts and trivia about M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Akshay Kumar wanted to play M.S. Dhoni himself, with Sushant Singh Rajput as the younger Dhoni, but director Pandey always wanted Rajput, since Rajput and Dhoni both come from the same part of India, which made getting the dialect right easy.
  • The film was not released in Pakistan because of problems following the 2016 Uri attack, and the media and marketing manager of its Pakistani distributor IMGC Global Entertainment told The Express Tribune that Dhoni is India's hero and that releasing it was risky.
  • Sushant Singh Rajput learned Dhoni's signature 'helicopter' shot by the end of his first day of filming, but suffered a hairline fracture and had to leave the production for two weeks.
  • Pandey said the research uncovered hidden aspects of Dhoni's life, including that Dhoni first disliked cricket and preferred football, that his 'helicopter shot' was taught to him by his friend Santosh Lal, and that Dhoni himself ousted Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid to build a younger team for the 2011 World Cup.
  • Pandey said 95% of the film's locations were authentic, and scenes were shot in Dhoni's real home in Ranchi, Jharkhand, at Kharagpur railway station where he worked as a ticket examiner, at his old school Jawahar Vidya Mandir and at the Mecon Limited quarter 142 he shared with four roommates.
  • Plans to dub the film in Marathi and release it in Maharashtra were scrapped after Amey Khopkar, chief of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena's film affairs wing Chitrapat Karmachari Sena, told the filmmakers a Marathi release would cause unfair competition for regional movies.
  • Sushant Singh Rajput trained for 18 months before shooting began, and to master Dhoni's trademark 'helicopter shot' the team fixed a bowling machine in one spot and had him play the same shot 200 to 300 times a day for a week until it came naturally.
