Plot summary
Ranbir Raj sings at the town's RK Bar, where Gulabji, a courtesan, nicknames him Saawariya and sends him to Lillian, a lonely landlady who rents him a room because he reminds her of her son. One night he sees Sakina alone on a footbridge, shields her from a drunkard and walks her home, and falls in love. From the clock tower he means to tell her, but Sakina says first that she belongs to Imaan, who lodged at her house and promised to return on the night of Eid. Raj doubts Imaan exists, so he asks Gulabji's advice, and she keeps her own love for him to herself.
