Wolfman Jack
Biography
Wolfman Jack was an American disc jockey whose radio career spanned more than three decades. He was known for a gravelly voice. Born Robert Weston Smith in Brooklyn, he studied at the National Academy of Broadcasting and finished there in 1960. His early work included a stint at WYOU in Newport News, Virginia, where he went by Daddy Jules, and a morning slot in Shreveport, Louisiana. At a Shreveport station he started shaping the Wolfman Jack persona, which he later took to the Mexican border station XERF. Its powerful signal carried across much of the United States, bringing him widespread fame. He went on to syndicate his old programs and broadcast on Armed Forces Radio. In 1973 he appeared as himself in George Lucas's American Graffiti (1973). For television, he was the announcer and occasional host of The Midnight Special from 1973 to 1981, and he hosted The Wolfman Jack Show.
