Biography

Sofia Coppola is an American filmmaker and former actress who first appeared on screen as an infant in her father's crime drama The Godfather (1972). Raised by filmmakers Eleanor and Francis Ford Coppola, she went on to small parts in The Outsiders (1983), Rumble Fish (1983) and Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), and played Mary Corleone in The Godfather Part III (1990). She moved behind the camera for her debut, The Virgin Suicides (1999), adapted from Jeffrey Eugenides's novel. Her screenplay for Lost in Translation (2003) brought her an Academy Award, and she also received a Best Director nomination, becoming the third woman to be nominated. Later work includes Marie Antoinette (2006), Somewhere (2010), which won the Golden Lion at Venice, The Bling Ring (2013), The Beguiled (2017), which earned her Best Director at Cannes, On the Rocks (2020) and Priscilla (2023). She co-wrote A Very Murray Christmas (2015) for Netflix, which was nominated for a Primetime Emmy.

    Coppola read Jeffrey Eugenides's book in 1995 after musician Thurston Moore recommended it, and the story drew her in. She has said that without the book, her film career might not have happened.
