Richard Schaal
Biography
Richard Schaal was an American actor who worked in film and television, born in Chicago in 1928. He joined Chicago's Second City in 1962 and became skilled at sketch and improvisational comedy. On television he was a frequent guest in the sitcoms of the 1970s, appearing in several episodes of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, where he played four different characters, and of The Bob Newhart Show, where he played three, as well as in Rhoda and in Phyllis, on which he had a recurring role as Leo Heatherton across 23 episodes. His earliest appearance alongside Mary Tyler Moore came in a 1966 episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show, billed as Dick Schaal. He and Valerie Harper wrote the 1970 Love, American Style episode Love and the Visitor, and in 1983 he took a recurring role in Just Our Luck. Schaal died in 2014.
