Ray Burdis
Biography
Ray Burdis is an English actor, screenwriter, director, and producer. He was born in London and started performing at eleven, training at the Anna Scher Theatre in Islington. His screen debut came in 1972 with The Trouble with 2B. At sixteen he took his first major part in the Thames Television series You Must Be Joking!, a show he helped create and write. He played Eckersley in Scum (1979), a role he had first taken in a BBC television version that was not broadcast until 1991. Other acting work included Minder, The Music Machine, Gandhi, Three Up, Two Down, and Manchild. He later focused on writing, producing, and directing, producing The Krays (1990) and co-writing, producing, and directing Final Cut (1998) and Love, Honor and Obey (2000). He also created and starred in Operation Good Guys, which earned awards at the Montreux Golden Rose Festival. He wrote and directed The Wee Man in 2013, and it won two Scottish BAFTAs.

A role that slipped away
Burdis auditioned in 1978 to be a presenter on the BBC children's show Blue Peter, hoping to replace John Noakes; footage of the audition was later shown at a BAFTA celebration in 2008.

In November 2024, Burdis said he wished he had not made Ronnie and Reggie Kray look glamorous, and was working on a new film showing them as thugs. He called them cowardly psychopathic bullies who terrorized London's East End in the 1960s.
