Michel Simon

Biography

Michel Simon was an actor who built his career on the stage before becoming one of France's outstanding character actors. He began acting in Geneva in 1920, and by 1923 he had settled in Paris, where he appeared in his first film two years later. That same year he took the role of Boudu on stage. The arrival of sound film established him in character parts, and he appeared in films by Jean Renoir, including La Chienne and Boudu Saved from Drowning (1932), by Jean Vigo in L'Atalante (1934), and by Marcel Carne in Port of Shadows (1938) and Drole de Drame. His output decreased in the 1950s, but he kept acting in films and remained on screen until his death in 1975.
