Plot summary
Edouard Lestingois, a bookseller in the Latin Quarter of Paris, pulls a tramp named Boudu out of the Seine after Boudu leaps from the Pont des Arts in an attempt to end his life. Lestingois gives him shelter, and the family sets out to make him a polite, middle-class man: he gets a shave and a haircut and is fitted with a suit. Emma Lestingois, the bookseller's wife, and Anne-Marie, the housemaid who is also Lestingois' mistress, are not pleased, because Boudu is idle, unwashed and lewd. He mocks the manners of the house and throws its routines into disorder.
