Marcel Marceau
Biography
Marcel Marceau was a French mime and actor who became known around the world as Bip the Clown. Born in Strasbourg, he trained at Charles Dullin's School of Dramatic Art and joined Jean-Louis Barrault's company, gaining notice as Arlequin in the pantomime Baptiste. That success led to Praxitele and the Golden Fish, the first of his mimodramas, and he was acknowledged as a stylist of pantomime without peer. In 1947 he created Bip at the Théâtre de Poche in Paris, dressed in a striped pullover and a battered opera hat. He received the Deburau Prize in 1949 and formed his own mime company, and his first tour of the United States followed in 1955 and 1956. His films included Professor Ping in Barbarella (1968) and Shanks (1974). In 1969 he opened his first mime school in Paris, and he died in 2007.

In Mel Brooks' Silent Movie (1976), Marceau had a cameo as himself and, with intentional irony, spoke the film's only audible line, the single word "Non!"

In 1969, Marceau's first school, the École Internationale de Mime, opened in Paris at the Théàtre de la Musique. It ran for two years and taught fencing, acrobatics, ballet and mime with five teachers.
