Biography

Joe Roberts was an American comic actor who worked in silent film and is remembered for appearing in 16 of the 19 short comedies Buster Keaton made in the 1920s. He came from vaudeville, where he was billed as Big Joe Roberts and toured with the act Roberts, Hays, and Roberts. At a Michigan summer colony for vaudevillians overseen by Keaton's father, he became friendly with the Keaton family. When Keaton launched his own series of shorts in 1920 after apprenticing with Roscoe Arbuckle, he brought Roberts aboard. The hefty Roberts, usually cast as a menacing heavy or an authority figure, made an amusing contrast beside the smaller Keaton. He later appeared in Keaton's features Three Ages (1923) and Our Hospitality (1923), and he played Roaring Bill Rivers in The Primitive Lover (1922). Under a Fox Films deal, he took a role as a training instructor in the Clyde Cook comedy The Misfit (1924). He died in 1923.
