Plot summary
At a poker table with friends, Crane Stewart, the New York Star's editor, tells the story of a murder investigation. In it, police lieutenant Tony Cochrane is a family man married to Martha, and he is also seeing Jill Merrill, a socialite with a husband of her own. Cochrane and Jill are parked by the beach one night when they see a man beat a woman to death with a tire iron. Neither can go to the police without exposing the affair, so both stay quiet. Cochrane is handed the killing as a case, and he works it while keeping what he saw to himself.
