Hugh Millais

Hugh Millais was a British actor and author whose screen work was closely tied to the director Robert Altman. Born in River Blackwater in 1929, he spent his childhood in Ireland and came to acting by accident: spotted in a bar in Pamplona, he was invited to meet Altman in England, who quickly cast him as the bounty hunter Dog Butler in Altman's McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971). Altman then gave him the part of Susannah York's lecherous neighbor Marcel in the psychological thriller Images (1972). On stage he took the lead in Wolf Mankowitz's The Samson Riddle at the Gate Theatre in Dublin in 1973. His later films included The Dogs of War (1980), as Roy Endean, and The Wicked Lady (1983), as Uncle Martin, and he had a role in Chicago Joe and the Showgirl (1990). He also appeared in British television series and published a cookbook in 2007. He died in 2009.
