Plot summary
Ceddie Errol's mother, whom the boy calls Dearest, raises him on little in 1880s Brooklyn after his father dies. The English grandfather, the Earl of Dorincourt, long ago disowned his own son for marrying an American woman. Because none of the Earl's sons are alive, the title passes to Ceddie alone, so the Earl sends his lawyer Havisham to bring the boy over. His mother goes with him, but she may not live at Dorincourt castle, and she hides the reason so her son will be happy.
