Elyse Knox

Biography

Elyse Knox was an American film actress and model who trained in fashion design in Manhattan before signing with 20th Century-Fox in November 1939. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, she spent a year in incidental film roles until Fox dropped her option, then comedy producer Hal Roach cast her in four features. After two minor pictures, she moved to Universal and became a featured ingenue in 11 films. Her lead opposite Lon Chaney Jr. came in The Mummy's Tomb (1942), and she appeared with Abbott and Costello in Hit the Ice (1943). During World War II she played herself in Follow the Boys and was a pin-up in Yank. Monogram signed her in late 1945 as Anne Howe, the love interest in Joe Palooka, Champ; its success led to five more Joe Palooka films. After making 39 films, she retired in 1949 following the musical There's a Girl in My Heart.
