Don Letts

Biography

Don Letts is a British film director, DJ and musician who first became known as the videographer for the Clash. Born in London, he was inspired by Jamaican music and in 1975 ran the London clothing store Acme Attractions, where his DJ sets mixed dub and reggae with punk and helped bring those sounds to London's punk audience. He made his first film, The Punk Rock Movie (1978), using Super 8 footage, and directed music videos for the Clash and for acts including Musical Youth, the Pretenders, Fun Boy Three, the Psychedelic Furs and Elvis Costello. In 1984 he co-founded Big Audio Dynamite with Mick Jones, acting as sampler and videographer until 1990. He won a Grammy Award in 2003 for his film The Clash: Westway to the World (2000), and in 2013 he received a BASCA Gold Badge of Merit. He also directed Dancehall Queen in 1997 and published the autobiography Culture Clash: Dread Meets Punk Rockers in 2006.
