Poly Styrene: I Am a Cliché (2021) on Netflix

Plot summary

Poly Styrene, the punk singer who fronted X-Ray Spex, was the first woman of color to lead a British rock band that found success. Her music fed into riot grrrl and Afropunk years later. She raised a daughter, Celeste, who inherited her mother's legacy along with the troubles that ran through Poly's life and damaged their bond. Celeste works through archive footage, through the diaries Poly kept and which are read aloud as narration, and through conversations with people who knew her mother or admired her work, to understand the woman behind the icon and the mother she grew up with.
