Plot summary
In 1942, eight-year-old Srulik Fridman, the son of a Jewish baker in a Polish village, is separated from his family and escapes the Warsaw ghetto. He survives on his own in the forest and farmland, doing chores for food and taking what he can, and for a time he joins a band of orphaned boys. Some of the people he meets would turn him in for a reward, beat him or try to kill him, while others risk almost everything to help. He spends the following years in rural occupied Poland, moving from place to place while keeping his Jewish identity hidden.
