Plot summary

In 1967 a visit by Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi of Iran to West Berlin ends in clashes between student protesters and the police, and the unarmed demonstrator Benno Ohnesorg is shot dead by the officer Karl-Heinz Kurras. The journalist Ulrike Meinhof says on television that West Germany has become a fascist police state. Encouraged by her words, Andreas Baader and Gudrun Ensslin firebomb department stores in Frankfurt in 1968. Meinhof covers their trial, befriends Ensslin and leaves her husband. When Baader is jailed again, an interview arranged outside the prison becomes a breakout, and Meinhof flees with the group, incriminating herself. The radicals train with Fatah in Jordan, come home as the Red Army Faction and rob banks, while the federal police chief Horst Herold directs the hunt for them.
