Plot summary

The NAACP picks four Black first-graders in New Orleans in 1960 to enter the city's all-white public schools, selecting them on their test scores. Three go to McDonogh 19. Ruby Bridges, six years old, is sent alone to William Frantz Elementary School, where US marshals hold back an angry mob. Her father, Abon Bridges, doubts that his daughter should be persecuted this way, while her mother, Lucielle "Lucy" Bridges, holds to a deep faith that gives the girl strength. At school, teacher Barbara Henry pushes back against her racist superiors and coworkers to stand by Ruby. Psychiatrist Robert Coles and his wife Jane Coles help her with the stress she carries.
