Plot summary
Rubin Farr's mother runs a motel where her son lives, and she has told him he cannot have his stereo back until he makes a friend. He also has a dead cat in a refrigerator that he refuses to bury anywhere but a spot he considers right. Ed Tuttle, divorced and middle-aged, recruits for the three-thousand-dollar seminars run by Mr. Busta. Rubin chooses Ed, and they drive toward the Utah desert to bury the cat, using a car Busta lent to Ed. Ed sees the trip as a chance to sign up a new customer. When the car breaks down, the two disagree about which town is nearest.

- Peter Boyle was considered for the role of Ed, but a near-fatal stroke left him speechless and immobile for nearly six months, so Howard Hesseman took the part after two weeks of filming.
- Crispin Glover wore platform shoes and a wig and nearly kicked David Letterman in the face on Late Night in 1987; after Rubin & Ed premiered, some speculated he had been in character as Rubin Farr, who also turns up in Glover's music video for "Clowny Clown Clown" as "Mr Farr".
