Rookie (2023) on Netflix

Plot summary

Basketball is the sport Ace Asuncion knows, but the all-girls Catholic high school she transfers to, San Lorenzo, has no team for it. When Coach Jules learns that the awkward six-footer plays the game well, she invites her to volleyball tryouts instead. Ace initially feels she does not belong on the volleyball court. Her feelings for Jana Ramos, the team captain, change how she regards the sport, while Jana treats her as a rival, which shifts how the two of them deal with each other. Ace forms bonds with Jana and the other players over time, and with them she experiences a sense of liberation.
