Plot summary
Angélique Delange has social anxiety and is afraid of just about everything, and she attends a support group for others who share it. She went to pastry school hoping to become a chocolate maker, but her fear of answering questions and sitting exams held her back. Mr. Mercier, who shared her condition, paid her to produce chocolates for his tearoom, Mercier Sweetshop, and told his customers that the chocolates came from a hermit who lived hidden in the mountains. She spent seven years there, until he died. Jean-René Van Den Hugde owns the Chocolate Mill, a small chocolate manufacturer that is struggling because its plain, old-fashioned chocolate no longer sells, and he is anxious too, particularly about intimacy. Angélique applies for a job, and a misunderstanding leads him to hire her as a sales representative.
