Plot summary
Tom Ripley and the British gangster Reeves run an art forgery operation out of Berlin. When Ripley learns that Reeves has cheated him, he takes the money intended for the forgeries from Reeves's client at gunpoint and ends their arrangement. Three years later, Ripley is settled in the Veneto with Luisa, a harpsichordist. A neighbor, the art framer Jonathan Trevanny, invites him to a party, where Ripley overhears Jonathan insult his taste and allude to his shady reputation. Ripley confronts him and leaves. Reeves then arrives at the villa and asks Ripley to eliminate a rival mobster. Ripley, remembering the slight, recommends Jonathan for the job. Reeves, believing Jonathan to be an assassin, offers him a large fee. Jonathan, who is dying of leukemia, accepts so that his wife and son will be provided for.
