Plot summary
Mike Donnelly and Katie Sipriano, teachers, open their rural New Hampshire home to the old college friends they knew when they were activists together. Frances Carlson, now in medical school, drives up with J.T., a would-be folk singer she found hitchhiking and once dated. Irene, a speechwriter for a Democratic senator, brings her conservative boyfriend Chip Hollister, who never went to college with the others. Maura tells the group that her relationship with Jeff has ended, which unsettles the first evening. Jeff turns up not knowing that Maura has broken things off. Maura and J.T. are attracted to each other.

- John Sayles paid for Return of the Secaucus 7 himself with the fees he earned writing exploitation films for Roger Corman, among them Piranha and Battle Beyond the Stars, and turned down Corman's offer to help finance it.
- Sayles wrote the script in the late seventies and said it was not autobiographical but drawn from people he met after college who were more politically involved than he was and were trying to keep their idealism together.
