Plot summary
Mark Cohen and Roger Davis live in an East Village apartment where their landlord, Benjamin Coffin III, has called in the rent. Their former roommate Tom Collins comes to the city and is mugged; Angel Dumott Schunard, a street drummer, finds him, and the two, both living with HIV, bond. Roger, an HIV-positive former addict, works on a song. Mimi Marquez, a dancer who lives downstairs, visits him. Mark films an AIDS support group for a documentary he is making.

An alternate ending on the DVD shows the whole cast standing in the spotlight positions from the opening number with an empty spot for Angel, who then walks in to take her place; director Chris Columbus cut it from the film because he worried it would make audiences think Angel was somehow alive again.SPOILER
The film softens how Roger's late girlfriend April died: on stage Mark explicitly says she slit her wrists and left Roger a suicide note revealing his HIV status, and director Chris Columbus actually filmed a bathtub scene showing her wrists cut before deciding it was 'too much' and leaving her death vague on screen.- The song 'Goodbye Love' was shot in full, but director Chris Columbus cut its second half from the finished film because he felt it piled on too much emotion at once.
