Plot summary

Red is a red unicycle propped in the clearance corner at Eben's Bikes, a bicycle shop in a deserted city on a rainy night. A sale tag hangs from his seat, and he is the only item left in that corner. He dreams of a better place: a circus ring, a clown named Lumpy who rides him out onstage, and a juggling act with three colored balls. Lumpy cycles on to little fanfare and keeps dropping the balls, so Red rolls out from beneath his feet and catches them himself. When one ball flies out of the ring, Red sets off after it.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Red's Dream (1987)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Space was so tight at Pixar's Marin County bungalow during Red's Dream that John Lasseter and his animation team worked out of a hallway, and Lasseter worked and slept there for days on end.
  • Red's Dream was the only Pixar film made using the Pixar Image Computer: engineer Tony Apodaca could convert only part of the rendering software to run on it because its processors lacked memory, so the dream sequence looked cruder than the rest.
  • After watching a Pixar screening, Disney animator Frank Thomas, one of the "Nine Old Men", shook John Lasseter's hand and told him "John, you did it", shedding the doubts he had voiced in a 1984 essay about computer animation.
  • The clown nicknamed Lumpy, one of Pixar's first human characters, was first sculpted as a physical model and then scanned into a computer with a digitizer so his facial structure would look organic.
  • For the juggling, the animators mapped the unicycle's path and let a quadratic programming algorithm calculate the balls' trajectories, and because the Pixar computer could not do motion blur, Lasseter used squash and stretch, also computed by the QP.
