Plot summary
Dennis Carson runs a rubber plantation in French Indochina, where workers tap the trees for sap, gales blow the roofs off huts, rain lasts for weeks and tigers prowl the jungle. Vantine turns up there after fleeing the authorities in Saigon. She takes the harsh surroundings in stride and teases Dennis from their first meeting, and he soon gives in, so the two settle into a friendly arrangement in which they call each other Fred and Lily and act too tough for affection. Then the Willises arrive: Gary, a young engineer new to the work, and his wife Barbara, a refined and ladylike beauty. Dennis loses interest in Vantine and is drawn to Barbara.
