Plot summary
Will Graham has a talent for entering the minds of criminals. Years ago, while working a case, he consulted the forensic psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter, and that encounter left Graham badly hurt and Lecter convicted and imprisoned. Graham then retired to Florida with his wife Molly and his son Josh. Now a killer nicknamed the Tooth Fairy has murdered families in different cities, one family at each full moon. Graham's former boss, Jack Crawford, asks him to go over the evidence and offer leads. Graham cannot determine how the killer chose the victim families, and he tells Crawford that the man has no face for him. He decides to seek Lecter's insight.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Red Dragon (2002)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director Brett Ratner and star Edward Norton disagreed over how Will Graham should show fear meeting the imprisoned Hannibal Lecter for the first time; they compromised by revealing sweat stains on Graham's shirt in the next scene instead of adding a visible reaction in the moment.
- Ralph Fiennes spent 90 minutes a day for months building up his physique to play Francis Dolarhyde, wore a prosthetic to give the character a cleft palate, and had the Great Red Dragon tattoo applied to his back in sessions lasting about eight hours.
- Anthony Hopkins hesitated to return as Hannibal Lecter for a third time, worried three films might be too much, while writer Ted Tally, who had turned down other serial-killer scripts since The Silence of the Lambs, said he wanted the trilogy to "end gracefully" rather than turn into "Hannibal Lecter XIII."
- Red Dragon set the record for the highest October opening weekend at the US box office, beating Meet the Parents, only for Scary Movie 3 to break that record the following year.
