Plot summary
In the poor, bomb-damaged Tokyo district where they live, Tashiro earns a living telling fortunes, Tamekichi mends pots and pans and trades in whatever he can find, and the widowed O-tane sells odds and ends. One evening Tashiro comes back to the house he shares with Tamekichi with Kōhei, a boy of about seven who lost track of his carpenter father in Kudan and followed Tashiro from the grounds of the Yasukuni Shrine. The boy belongs in Chigasaki, some forty miles away. Tashiro offers him a place to sleep, but Tamekichi says he cannot stand children and refuses. He tells Tashiro to take Kōhei across the street to O-tane, who takes the boy in against her wishes. That night Kōhei wets the futon.
