Plot summary
Stanislas Graff, a rich industrialist, is dragged from his limousine on the eve of a trip to China with the French president's entourage. The kidnappers want fifty million euros and send one of his fingers to his company as proof they mean it. His wife, Françoise, and their teenage daughters are left to face a press that prints accounts of his mistresses and his gambling losses. The board of the firm he directs will not release the sum from company funds, offering instead a loan of twenty million. Graff sits in the dark, unwashed and hungry, writing pleas to his family while the police, the kidnappers and the company argue over the money.
